Kevin Christensen calls for repeal of federal wild horse policy to protect Wyoming rangelands and taxpayers CASPER, Wyo. – U.S. House candidate Kevin Christensen today called for repealing the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, arguing that Washington’s current approach is failing Wyoming rangelands, burdening taxpayers, and trapping land managers in an expensive cycle with no long-term solution. Ahead of remarks to the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, Christensen made repeal of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 a centerpiece of his public lands agenda. “Wyoming’s rangelands are one of our state’s greatest assets, and Washington is failing to protect them,” Christensen said. “If elected to Congress, I will fight to repeal the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 so Wyoming can restore balance on the range, protect working lands, and stop wasting taxpayer dollars on a broken federal system.” Christensen said the law was enacted at a time when wild horses and burros were seen as disappearing from the American West, but that the policy no longer reflects current conditions on the ground. According to the Bureau of Land Management, the nationwide population on BLM managed lands was estimated at more than 85,000 animals as of March 1, 2026, nearly three times the agency’s established appropriate management level. In Wyoming alone, the BLM manages nearly 5 million acres of herd management areas, where herd numbers continue to put pressure on already strained rangelands. Christensen also noted that damage to rangelands from overpopulation extends to state and private lands, not just federal land. He also pointed to the growing cost of federal management. BLM program data shows annual wild horse and burro management spending in the hundreds of millions of dollars, with much of the burden tied to gathers, holding facilities, and long-term care for excess animals removed from the range. Christensen said that model has produced rising costs, recurring legal fights, and too little flexibility for state and local land managers to respond effectively. “Wild horses remain a powerful symbol of the American West, but symbolism alone is not a management plan,” Christensen said. “Wyoming should have a stronger voice in deciding how these animals are managed, how our rangelands are protected, and how taxpayer money is spent. It is time to put practical stewardship ahead of failed federal control.” Christensen added that Wyoming has managed wildlife more successfully than the federal government in many cases, noting, “Wild horses should be managed by the state, just as most other species are in Wyoming.”

Congress is Broken - U.S. House Candidate Kevin Christensen calls for Congressional Reform CASPER, Wyo. – U.S. House candidate Kevin Christensen today said it is well past time to reform the way Congress does business and to earn back the trust of the American people. “For too many years Americans have paid the price for Congress’ lack of discipline and inability to do their most basic duty of passing sustainable annual budgets that are responsive to needs of the country,” stated Christensen. This price is increasing with American debt now exceeding $39 trillion. America is at a crossroad that, depending on which path is taken, will determine what the economic future holds for future generations. As Wyoming’s Representative to the U.S. House, Christensen said he will introduce legislation that will add discipline and accountability to the federal budget process and how Congress operates. Congress must start living within its means, just as states and American taxpayers are required to do. Christensen plans to prioritize passing a constitutional amendment for a balanced budget that is accountable to American taxpayers and would bring discipline including not going on recess until all appropriations bills are passed by both houses and on the President’s desk by October 1. This means no longer taking the easy path of continuing resolutions and no costly government shutdowns. Sadly, Congress has become an institution that facilitates career politicians and must be reformed in its compensation and tenure. “I will work with congressional colleagues and the President to ensure that Congress serves the American people and not itself,” said Christensen. Specifically, this would include: ï‚· Congress will no longer be able to vote a pay raise for themselves and will have the same cost of living increases that the rest of the federal workforce receives. ï‚· Similarly, Congress will no longer be entitled to special health care perks and will only be eligible for what they put in place for the American people they serve. ï‚· Congress will not be able to purchase new individual stocks and must divest their interest in existing individual stocks to avoid insider trading and any appearance of impropriety. All members of Congress will have strict term limits, including no more than three 2-year terms of House members and two 6-year terms for Senate members.
